Flaring of associated gas contributes significantly to the global emissions of greenhouse gases.

The World Bank (2003) has estimated that the annual volume of associated gas being flared and vented in the petroleum industry is about 110 billion m3, enough fuel to provide the combined annual natural gas consumption of Germany and France.
